Leesons Primary School

Music

Music is a very significant part of a pupil’s time at Leesons.  As well as being taught as a subject in its own right, Music is an integral part of our school community with weekly singing assemblies, performances by pupils and experiencing live music first hand - whether through visiting musicians in school, a trip to the London West End to see a musical, seeing ballet or opera at the Royal Opera House or singing along with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

As well as having music lessons taught by class teachers (where children build on their understanding and appreciation of a range of music, singing, improvising and composing) children at Lessons have external class lessons from specialist music teachers from Bromley Youth Music Trust.  This begins in Reception with music making, singing and building on key ideas such as understanding the beat of the music and playing un-tuned percussion instruments.  By the end of Year 6 pupils will have learnt to play glockenspiel, p buzz, boom whackers, recorder, ukulele and djembe drums through their BYMT lessons.

The active school choir sings at school events, community events supporting local charities and visits a local care home.  They also take part in bigger external projects such as The Bromley Schools Prom and Young Voices at the O2.

Most importantly the benefits to the children go beyond the music knowledge and skills itself - the happiness of learning a new instrument each year, experiencing the emotions of hearing live music and taking part in a performance as a group increasing confidence and supporting team work towards a common goal.
